These Are The Last 5 Countries in Europe With Travel Restrictions

As summer is heating in the northern hemisphere, millions of people are traveling for their vacations, and Europe is the ultimate summer getaway this year.
Almost every country on the entire continent has removed all entry requirements making visiting a breeze, however, there are a handful of stubborn nations that have not yet removed rules. Currently, there are only 5 countries in Europe with travel restrictions. The most recent EU country to remove all entry restrictions was Portugal on July 1.
Spain, France, The Netherlands, Malta, and Luxembourg are the only countries in Europe with some travel restrictions.

Below are the 5 countries in Europe that still have some Covid travel restrictions and where you can go instead if you prefer not to deal with any restrictions.
1.Malta
As of 6th June 2022, people aged 12 years and over are permitted to travel to Malta without undergoing quarantine as long as they provide one of the 3 documents mentioned below:
- Proof of vaccination.
- Proof of recovery.
- Test certificate. A negative PCR test result obtained no more than 72 hours before arrival or a negative rapid antigen test obtained no more than 24 hours before arrival.
Where to go instead? Cyprus.
Cyprus is less than 3 hours of flying away from Malta and you don’t just get all the same island perks you’d be getting if you were traveling to Malta, but you also do not have to worry about any types of entry restrictions.
Cyprus removed all of its entry restrictions back in June. Travelers will no longer have to worry about taking any tests, showing proof of vaccinations, or anything else for that matter.
2. Netherlands
If you are traveling to the Netherlands as a U.S. citizen coming from the United States you are required to show the following:
Where you should go instead? Belgium.
Belgium, only 130 miles away from the Netherlands is a fantastic destination for anyone who likes the same romantic and charming canals that Holland has to offer. Instead of having to show any form of entry documentation, Belgium decided to lift all of its entry requirements.
Travelers can make their way down the flatland canals in Belgium which are astonishing, quaint, and less crowded.
3. France
Travelers looking to travel to France will need to show the following:
- Proof of Vaccination.
- If unvaccinated, travelers are instead required to present a negative test result to enter France. (48-hour antigen or 72-hour PCR)
- Fill out the EU-PLF form.
Where to go instead? Italy.
Travelers can avoid showing proof of vaccination or a negative covid test if they skip the French Rivera this summer and make their a few hundred miles south-east to the famous wine country Tuscany in Italy.
Rent a car in Florence and explore the vast countryside with hundreds of wineries, many hundreds of years old. Get away from the large crowds and blend into the Italian wilderness.
You’ll still get the great weather you’d otherwise be getting in France, the cultural cuisine will also be similar and quite exquisite.
4. Spain
Current entry requirements for Spain:
All Americans including unvaccinated ones are allowed to travel to Spain. There are however different entry requirements depending on your vaccination status.
Vaccinated Americans over 12:
- Show proof of vaccination, or proof of recovery, or show a negative PCR or RAT test.
- U.S. citizens traveling from the United States to Spain must present upon arrival in Spain a QR code generated through the Spain Travel Health portal, obtained through the website, or by downloading the “SpTH app”.
Unvaccinated Americans:
If you’re not fully vaccinated, you can enter Spain presenting one of the following documents:
- Documentation certifying that you have undertaken a PCR test within 72 hours of departure or a rapid antigen test if traveling within 24 hours.
- proof of having recovered from COVID-19 in the last 6 months.
Unvaccinated Americans must also fill out a QR code before departing for Spain which can be obtained through Spain’s Travel Health portal.
Where to go instead? Portugal.
Portugal has just dropped all of its entry requirements and it’s a perfect alternative to Spain. The neighboring country is cheaper than Spain yet offers an incredible amount of things to do, places to see, and wine to drink.
Skip Mallorca, Ibiza, and Barcelona, explore the islands off the coast of Portugal, Faial Island, Santa Maria Island, or get lost in Portugal’s capital Lisbon.
Anything you can do in Spain, you’ll be able to do in Portugal.
5. Luxembourg
One of the smallest countries in the world, Luxembourg is smaller than the state of Rhode Island. It is also one of the few countries in Europe that still has a few entry requirements.
- Show proof of vaccination.
- Complete passenger locator form before arrival.
- If you’re not fully vaccinated, you’ll need to show proof of a negative PCR test (taken no more than 48 hours before entry) or rapid lateral flow test (taken no more than 24 hours before entry) when entering Luxembourg.
- If you’re not fully vaccinated but have tested positive for COVID-19 in the last year you can enter Luxembourg. You will need to show proof of recovery.
Where to go instead? Germany.
Germany is the neighboring country of Luxembourg, it also removed all of its entry requirements and makes for a great alternative to Luxembourg if you rather not deal with the entry requirements.
The architecture in Germany will be very similar to Luxembourg as well as many other cultural similarities. In fact, both countries were once part of the Holy Roman Empire. Luxembourg had also been part of the German Customs Union before the European Union.
Germany will be very similar to Luxembourg minus the entry requirements.
